Runes

Runes are an ancient set of symbols that are used both in divination and magick. There are several types of runes with different origins including the Norse, Scandinavian and Germanic runes. Runes come from the letters in the old Celtic, Teutonic and Scandinavian alphabets; the word is based on roots meaning "secret" or "occult."

READING THE RUNES

The Rune symbols are usually bought from specialist shops or can be made by carving or burning the rune letters onto wood. (The wood of a fruit tree is usually considered to be most auspicious.) Sometimes people use metal or card to draw their runes. The reverse of the card is left blank.

To give a reading the runes are shuffles like dominoes and then 13 are arranged face down in a circle with one rune in the middle. This is called the runic wheel. The runes are then turned face upwards one at a time and interpreted according to their position on the runic wheel.
